Primary Mornings (ages 3-4)
3 or 5 day option
Children arrive to school and enter the classroom independently. After a brief circle time, the children have an independent “work cycle,” in which they are encouraged to explore activities of their choice in the areas of language, math, cultural studies, practical life, and sensorial. They may work independently, or with a friend. During this time the Head Teacher gives lessons to children individually or in a small group. The morning concludes with free play outside, weather permitting. All children participate in group singing and prepare two concerts each year.
Full-Day (ages 3-4)
3 or 5 day option
After a mid-day break for lunch, and rest, children who stay until 2:30 have the opportunity for an additional work cycle in the Montessori environment.
Extended Day (ages 5-6)
Children who are kindergarten-age have a special role in the classroom as role models and leaders. By this time, children are usually reading and have mastered more complex math materials. They have the opportunity to consolidate their learning by reviewing materials and build confidence by teaching younger peers. Special instruction is offered in Art and Music and they enjoy special activities with their peer group to build community.
Lower Elementary (ages 6-9)
In the Lower Elementary classroom, movement and hands-on learning allow children to continue to explore the Montessori curriculum at their own pace. The Great Lessons presented each year establish the framework for the integrated study of subjects in science and cultural studies, including botany, zoology, physics, chemistry and history. Art, Music, and Spanish instruction continues, and the children learn to play tin whistle and have instruction in Fitness, including dance and yoga. Work plans and mindfulness meetings allow students to balance academic, social, and emotional growth in the classroom. Each year the class takes an overnight field trip, in addition to day field trips, and regular exploration in our Outdoor Classroom.
Upper Elementary (ages 9-12)
The Upper Elementary classroom provides the tools, materials, technology, and instruction to allow the older child to explore curriculum areas in detail. The Montessori curriculum remains a core element of daily instruction. Upper Elementary students are encouraged to complete independent research projects and service learning projects guided by personal interests. Time management and social and emotional learning skills are fostered through community building activities and independent work plans. Art, Music and Spanish instruction continues. In addition to overnight field trips, students may plan ‘going out’ trips to enrich their learning.
